Sacramento County Jury Hands Down Record-Breaking Personal Injury Verdict

On December 6, 2013, a Sacramento County jury stood up for what was right, and awarded a record-breaking personal injury verdict of $34.9 million against Silva Trucking Company. The recipients of this generous and well-deserved compensation were Mr. Bill and Mrs. Debra Hackett of Galt, California—a couple whose lives were changed forever by the negligent actions of a tractor trailer operator.

In October 2010, Mrs. Hackett was driving a bus down the highway when a tractor trailer truck swerved and crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic; the two vehicles collided, leaving Mrs. Hackett with a massive closed injury to the head and paralyzed from the waist down.

After receiving acute medical care, 56-year-old Mrs. Hackett was placed in a nearby nursing facility; although the care was both specialized and expert, the injured woman was unable to return to her home and family without 24/7, live-in care—something that she and her husband simply could not afford.

After the Sacramento jury awarded her $34.9 million in damages, Mrs. Hackett was able to return home to her family with proper medical care.

As trial attorneys who represent those who have been wrongfully injured by the negligent actions of others, the lawyers of Pope & Howard, P.C. are glad to see justice upheld and just compensation awarded to the plaintiff.

“Too many victims of trucking accidents are afraid to speak up, or simply don’t know who to turn to,” remarked Pope. “This just goes to show that big trucking and insurance companies don’t always win.”
