Injury or Death Of A Child

Having children ourselves and having handled numerous cases involving death or serious injury to a child, we firmly believe losing a child is among the most devastating events a parent can experience.  Our experience in these cases has allowed us to develop an understand of the unique issues parents face in these cases, such as the natural tendency of a parent to blame herself.  Frequently, such a tragedy can exacerbate tensions between the parents or other family members.  With our experience, we are well-equipped to work with parents to make sure that their emotions and issues are not destructive of themselves or the case. 

From a legal standpoint, one unique aspect of these cases is that the attorney must learn who the child really was and who the child would have become.  At Pope & Howard, we get to know the family, teachers, and friends of the child so that we can understand as well as possible who the person was and what kind of adult the child is likely to have become.  We believe this approach is essential in order for us to present the jury with as honest a picture of the child as possible.  We are also convinced that this personal approach explains why we have been able to achieve some extraordinary outcomes in cases involving children.
