Brain and Spinal Cord Injury
Injuries to the brain and spinal cord can devastate not just an individual, but an entire family. These patients require very specialized care and often suffer severe emotional problems, either from the injury itself or from the psychological effects the injury has on the person. At Pope & Howard, many of our clients suffer from a brain or spinal cord injury, so we understand that these clients and their families are learning to adjust to a difficult reality -- often having to perform the basic functions of everyday life for a previously self-sufficient member of the family. Our clients often find that our working relationships with some of the leading healthcare providers in this highly-specialized area help them adapt to the new reality.
Brain and spinal cord injury cases often pose difficult challenges. For instance, the severity of brain injuries is sometimes difficult to detect without sophisticated testing, so an untrained observer (such as a juror) might not recognize the severity of many brain injuries just by “looking” at the individual. At Pope & Howard, we have significant experience and expertise in demonstrating to an untrained individual how deficits revealed by a sophisticated neuropsychological test affect someone’s daily life. Because we understand the science behind these tests, we can also negate efforts by biased testers to minimize the impact of a neurological injury.
